Hello Group!
I am the Executive Director of Nevada EcoNet, a Reno based non-profit organization with the mission of promoting sustainability in the Northern Nevada and North Tahoe region. As part of the sustainability movement we are interested in maintaining a high quality of life for ourselves and future generations, and we are supporting this mission with events and programs that enhance our environment, our community, and our local economy.
Environment: Our natural resources are precious and it is critically important that we begin to mitigate extraction, consumption, and pollution. It is also important that our young people have the opportunity to experience open spaces and wilderness activities.
Community: A big part of sustainability involves breaking down the barriers that traditionally divide us. A stronger community is more capable of engaging in the collaborative decision making processes that make up local self-governance. Vitality in Arts & Culture also means that people have available avenues to pursue their passions, express themselves in an open forum, and become mentors for others.
Economy: Studies have shown that when community members purchase goods from local, independently owned businesses it is more likely that their contribution to the economy will be used at a later time for philanthropic or charitable support for local non-profits. With a shaky foundation at the base of traditional government or corporate grant programs our regional non-profits need your help.
2009 is a year of sustainability, thank you all for your participation and effort. Pick a non-profit that works for the environment, community, or economy and become a bigger part of this epoch-making movement!
